3D Metrology Conference: Metrology as a driver of innovation

The 3D Metrology Conference (3DMC) celebrated its tenth anniversary in Aachen, one of the most important locations for industrial metrology. The conclusion of the conference was clear: Metrology is a driver of innovation.

Organized by the Machine Tool Laboratory WZL at RWTH Aachen University in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Loughborough University (LBoro), University College London (UCL), Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and TEKNIKER, the conference returned to its founding venue on the RWTH Aachen Campus after successful editions in cities such as Hamburg, London, Bilbao and Loughborough. "The 10th international 3DMC back in Aachen underlines the importance for value creation in industrial manufacturing," explained Prof. Dr. Robert Schmitt, Chair of Information, Quality and Sensor Systems at the WZL at RWTH Aachen University.

Over 100 industrial users and academically renowned experts exchanged ideas at the conference and characterized the innovative and open character of the event. The event kicked off with Quidient, a company in the field of 3D imaging technology, demonstrating how Generalized Scene Reconstruction (GSR) can be used to separately capture light and material properties in order to create realistic 5D models for visualization and analysis. Another focus was on a toolset for high-end calibration of coordinate measuring machines by SIOS Messtechnik GmbH, which is based on interferometry and achieves measurement accuracies in the nanometer range (<150 nm).

The varied program also included a keynote speech by Prof. Heiko Wenzel-Schinzer (VDMA Length Measurement Technology), practice-oriented workshops, special interest sessions and poster presentations. An industry forum with live demonstrations from leading companies such as AfM Technology, Ahlborn Mess- und Regelungstechnik GmbH, Bilz Vibrations Technology AG, Hexagon, Metubiq, Mitutoyo, Ommatidia, Polytec GmbH, Quidient, SIOS Messtechnik GmbH and Werth Messtechnik GmbH rounded off the event.
