ISC2 improves its Computerized Adaptive Testing

ISC2 has now converted three more popular cybersecurity certifications to Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). This offers participants in their certification programs a more efficient, secure and accurate testing experience based on the latest technology.

ISC2, the non-profit membership organization for cybersecurity professionals, has announced the transition of three certifications - Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) and Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) - to the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) format. With this move, ISC2 is ensuring that its services are delivered using state-of-the-art technology, providing candidates with a more efficient, secure and accurate exam experience.

More precise measurement of skills

Unlike traditional linear exams, the recognized and proven CAT format adapts to each candidate's performance in real time without compromising on standards. CAT increases exam security by creating a customized exam for each candidate. This reduces candidate exam fatigue and provides a more accurate measure of ability. The exam ends once the candidate's demonstrated competence meets or exceeds the threshold required to pass an exam - based on the robust frameworks of each exam that meet international standards. This dynamic approach results in a customized exam experience that is more efficient and secure, as the variations prevent exam items from becoming known to other candidates.

"The transition to CAT supports ISC2's mission to create a safer cyber world by ensuring that our exams meet the highest standards of integrity and assessment of a candidate's knowledge, skills and competencies," said Casey Marks, Chief Operating Officer of ISC2. "This ensures that candidates are assessed based on their actual level of competency - not just their ability to sit through a lengthy exam."

The implementation of Computerized Adaptive Testing helps to meet the high demand for cybersecurity professionals by providing a fair, valid, reliable and efficient testing process. It validates knowledge, skills and competencies for both entry and advancement in the cybersecurity profession. It also gives employers the assurance that the enhanced examination method meets the highest standards of integrity - and the assurance that those who pass an ISC2 certification examination have been subjected to rigorous global standards.

Expansion of the CAT exam portfolio

As part of the latest technical updates, the CC, SSCP and CCSP certifications are joining the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification, which was already converted to CAT in all languages in April 2024.

Cybersecurity professionals preparing for the CC, SSCP or CCSP certification can expect a streamlined, data-driven exam experience that meets the evolving needs of the industry. "Our exam candidates taking these new exams offered in the CAT format can rest assured that the content will be the same as the previous format. So those who were ready and confident to pass the linear exam should feel equally confident to take the exam in the new CAT format," says Marks.
