(Image: depositphotos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In April 2018, over 800 health apps were evaluated for the first time in German-speaking countries. For this purpose, digital health experts were recruited to examine important key data in e-health for HealthOn, an independent comparison portal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>German-language offerings were tested, e.g. diabetes, back pain, blood pressure and asthma apps as well as apps that support a healthy lifestyle, e.g. relaxation, exercise, nutrition, vaccination and prevention apps. An online test provides information about the evaluation criteria. The quality assessment is based on accepted scientific standards for good health information (DISCERN, <a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthon.de\/gesundheitsapp_glossar#HON\"><acronym title=\"A non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1995 and recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The foundation promotes trustworthiness of health information on websites and has developed a code of conduct, the HONcode, for this purpose. Worldwide, 8300 websites are currently HON-certified.http:\/\/www.hon.ch\/cgi-bin\/HONinfo_new?old+BULLETIN57\">HON<\/acronym><\/a>-Code).<\/p>\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>In the form of quality-assured test reports, the portal for health and medical apps now features different grades.<\/p>\n<p>The test reports provide information on this,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>what the health and medical apps can do and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>how the apps perform in terms of security and trustworthiness. Users can compare apps with each other and choose the one that suits them best. <a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthon.de\/gesundheitsapp_glossar#App\"><acronym title=\"Apps (abbreviation for applications) in the mobile sector are software programs that are developed specifically for smartphones and tablets. They cover a wide variety of application areas, including news and information services, access to social networks, navigation services or games. Native apps represent the classic development model, in which applications are developed specifically for a platform using the programming language intended for that platform. They can be run on smartphones for which they are programmed, i.e. iOS apps for iPhones, Android apps e.g. for smartphones running Google&#039;s Android operating system. Web apps can be used via the browser with any smartphone, they require access to the Internet. Apps are distributed and installed via the marketplace of the respective platform (e.g. Apple App Store, Google Play Store or Windows Store). In addition to native apps, there are also web apps and hybrid apps.\">App<\/acronym><\/a> find<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Find Good Health Apps Checklist<\/h2>\n<p>HealthOn also offers an online checklist for orientation purposes, which users can use to assess the individual risk of a <a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthon.de\/gesundheitsapp_glossar#Gesundheits-App\"><acronym title=\"Apps that, according to the WHO&#039;s expanded concept of health promotion from 1946, aim to influence physical, mental and social well-being positively, sustainably and on the basis of scientific findings.\">Health app<\/acronym><\/a> be able to assess themselves. HealthOn wants to make users aware of the neuralgic points that they can check themselves before using a health app and thus strengthen the digital health literacy of consumers and patients. Only in this way can citizens use health and medical apps in a self-determined and safe manner for their own benefit.<\/p>\n<h2>App listed on HealthOn? Quick Check:<\/h2>\n<p>App sellers can use a special search to find out whether an app is already listed on HealthOn without prior registration. Apps whose providers provide transparent information about the scientific soundness of the health information and the security of user data are marked by HealthOn with the HealthOn seal for trustworthy health apps.<\/p>\n<h2>800 test reports on HealthOn - an important milestone<\/h2>\n<p>The investigation did not avoid a \"manual\" review of the offers, the opening of the potentially relevant apps and the examination of the content and its evidence as well as the functionalities and the data streams by an experienced, interdisciplinary team of examiners. Many years of experience made the experts cautiously skeptical that a \"semi-automatic retrospective <a class=\"lexicon-term\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthon.de\/gesundheitsapp_glossar#App_Store\"><acronym title=\"An app store or app marketplace is a distribution and sales platform for mobile and desktop applications. Each mobile platform provider maintains such a store, through which both the platform operator and third-party providers can make apps available for download (e.g. Apple App Store, Google Play Store or Windows Store). App stores typically include a searchable app catalog divided into categories, as well as a sales and billing system for paid apps and other content.
