HUAWEI and Leica Camera AG are further expanding their strategic cooperation with the establishment of a joint research and innovation center, the Max Berek Innovation Lab. The foundation comes seven months after the announcement of the long-term technology partnership in the field of optical engineering and five months after the launch of the first joint products, the globally successful and multiple award-winning HUAWEI smartphones P9 and P9 Plus.<\/p>\n

The new research center, located at the Leica headquarters in Wetzlar, will be dedicated to the further development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve image quality in the various application spectrums in the field of photography and mobile devices. In addition, the focus will be on the development of future technologies in the areas of computational imaging, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). To this end, development teams from both companies will collaborate with German and international universities and research institutions.<\/p>\n

Max Berek Innovation Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"In the future, over 90 percent of data traffic will be images and videos,\" said Ren Zhengfei, founder of HUAWEI. \"The Max Berek Innovation Lab will enable us to further strengthen our partnership with Leica and continuously achieve improvements in the image and video quality of our products. As a result, we will deliver the most advanced innovations in smartphone cameras and create even greater value for our customers.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, the name of the joint research and innovation center goes back to the German pioneer of microscopy and creator of the first Leica lenses, Max Berek (1886 - 1949), who calculated over 20 lenses for the legendary 35 mm camera conceived and constructed by Oskar Barnack. Thanks to their excellent imaging performance and only through the interaction of Barnack's ingenious design with Berek's outstanding lenses was it possible to lead the Leica camera, and with it 35 mm photography, to worldwide success.<\/p>\n
